Good suggestions, Victor. Not to haagle with you, but I've done something similar for Trader Princes. The focus is SLIGHTLY different though.
Boatmen
>From the earliest times, boatmen have traveled the rivers of Maniria,
carrying goods between the scattered settlements. Some ply the waters
in stout boats under the command of the Trader Princes while others
guide great rafts of logs downstream to the burgeoning towns along
the coast. Many different types of people turn to this hard life:
wanderers, fugitives from justice or people simply trying to support
their families. In addition to boat-skills, rivermen often portage
(carry) heavy loads around rapids or falls or are forced to defend
their cargoes against rapacious tribesmen. It's a hard life.
Beginning Hero Suggestions: Boatmen often leave their profession to seek adventure and a more rewarding pastime than dragging a boat up and down the river.
Skills: Agile, Boating, Carry Heavy Load, Close Combat (Improvised Weapon), Endure Weather, Drink, Know <River>, Sing, Swim, Tireless Relationships: to Crew; to Captain, or Trader Prince.
Followers: None, in general. Maybe an old buddy sticks around to help his more successful friend.
Personality Traits: Boisterous, Patient, Sullen, Superstitious
Magic: River Sprit, Trader God, Travel Saint
Living Standard: Poor.
Typical Equipment: Appropriate weapons, leather armor, *their* paddle, alcohol, possibly a boat and/or small cottage or place at a larger farmstead.
Culture: While many boatmen are Wenelian Orlanthi, most are drawn from the Malkioni/Wenelian half-breeds that live around the various Trader Prince settlements
