I like this approach - basing the future on precedents and similar events in the past. I also think they might have a stock of old prophesies that they 'know' and can apply when the conditions apply.
"Eagle flies to the left,
Battle leader soon bereft,
Eagle flies to the right
We will win the fight"
As an aside, I had a lot of fun converting the prophesies of Nostradamus to Gloranthan themes.
