When I first got Heroquest I had a bit of trouble with the rules to be fair, but then I have never been the sharpest tool in the box!!
I, a self confessed rules lawyer, actually started playing before I had a full grasp of the rules. I found that once you start, if you have a basic grasp, then they are quite intuitive in use. They are also a lot less intrusive than other systems. The example adventures actually formed the foundation of the campaign I ran, and they were well recieved. The best thing is that they also introduced the rules in a fairly structured way.
