Because we're told that adultery is a major taboo, and a crime against the gods. Sex between unmarried persons is seen as perfectly natural, making one wonder why a prostitute would be needed in a typical Heortling community (as I've said, cities are a different matter).

True, but Astarte isn't a heortling goddess, which is what I'm talking about. I don't see how else to square the statements 'adultery is a crime against the gods', and 'regular crimes against the gods are punished throughout the community' than to assume that prostitution focusing on already married people is a Bad Idea. True, adultery is permitted during the Sacred Time, but you could hardly support a career as a professional prostitute on that...
