Yes, I think so. (In fact, I posted about this a couple of hours ago, but it hasn't shown up on the group yet!) In short, in British English Elk = Moose; they are the same animal. It is only in US English that they are different creatures. A reindeer (=US English 'caribou') is certainly a different animal from either, though. But, while everyone in Britain would know what a 'moose' was, many would not know what an American is referring to when they say 'elk'.
