As I recall it is (at least in part) to do with whether the beer
is "Top Fermented" or "Bottom Fermented" - I think that Lager
is "bottom fermented" while the beers that you'd actually want to
drink* are "top fermented", but it might be the other way around
*I'm one of those people for whom the experience of "english**
lagers" was enough to determine I wasn't interested in trying any
others
- Many of which claim to be German, Danish, Australian, Canadian
etc, but are all brewed here under license...
