So you are saying that the chaos feature is an ability with a target number and that each protagonist's player rolls against that ability. Their differing contest outcomes enable them to narrate differing effects.

It sounds like something that affects observer's perceptions. It doesn't affect (change) the chaotic's opponent's actual shape, size, smell, sound, appearance, etc. It changes the way other beings see (smell, hear, darksense, whatever) the chaotic's opponent.

If it's a matter of the ability affecting the observer's perception, then each observer resists individually. The actual direct opponent fighting the chaotic doesn't get to resist, since they are not really being affected (changed) by the ability.

Some observers see two of the chaotic, some people see one and the opponent, depending on how well each observer resists the chaotic ability.

If the chaotic has multiple opponents, each could resist against seeing the other opponents as mirrors of the chaotic. A, B, and C gang up on a broo X. A is unsuccessful, and sees B and C as mirrors of X. B is successful, and sees A, C, and X clearly. C is partially successful, and sees A clearly, but also sees B as a mirror-X. Clear as mud, right?
