Man Rune

A lot of the analysis of the man rune not giving magic is centered, implicitly, on theism. Theism is being or becoming. Magic is something you are. So you become more of a man-runed thing. Whoop-de-do.

But animism isn't like that. There, a spirit is something you control, that you negotiate with. So, having a spirit characterized by a man rune can be useful, just like having a man-runed corporeal person as an ally. It's an ancestor, a leader, a hunter, a warrior, a guide, a teacher, etc. Yeah, a man-rune spirit doesn't let you throw fireballs, but it lets you con Ingmar the trader and teaches you about the mysterious plinth at the edge of your lands.
