I had a theory that the Puzzle Canal represented Sea Mythology with its Outer Maze, Hidden Maze, Deep Maze and Elf Maze representing different parts of the ocean (I cannot remember exactly but something like the surface, the niiadic zone, the depths) , the Islands representing the continents (Long Island - Genertela, Island 22 - Pamaltela), and various grottos the main sea deities. It all fitted reasonably well IMO.
