This practice seems to be limited to the High King of the (Dragon Pass) Orlanthi and the Princes of Sartar.

The chief of a clan is a noble, and the ranking Ernaldan woman (priestess) is likely the only other noble in the clan. And there's a good chance that the Chief and the ranking Ernaldan woman are married to each other!

The daughter of a chief is a very valuable asset to the clan. Think of the opportunities to improve the clan's position through marriage. The daughter will likely have less involvement in choosing her spouse than most of the other girls of her age. Of course, she can still say no to the most dreadful choices but, after the 2nd rejection, the pressure will start to mount.

Not necessarily a good position for a player character :D Her status might be that of a thane (next best thing to noble). However her freedom to choose her own path may be restricted exactly because she is an 'unearned' thane.

And if her father dies, retires or is voted out, bang goes her status!

Charles
