The Karandoli mystery

The Karandoli clan of the Colymar is reported to have been destroyed twice, once under King Robasart of the Colymar around 1440, in the course of the Zarran War, and again under King Venharl Intagarnsson of the Colymar around 1491. Both times the previous King of the Colymar was a Karandoli clansman.

Argrath claims descent from the Karandoli when he asks for acceptance by Queen Leika, and recites a (believable) list of ancestors and their deeds, in which a Maniski Firebreath is mentioned as oldest ancestor. Maniski is given as his father's name elsewhere, but with the epithet Two-Sight, which we find elsewhere for his mother.

There is the notable fact that King Robasart is a grandson of the same Maniski Firebreath King Ortossi of the Colymar (11th king, who ruled to 1491) and thus Argrath claim as ancestor. Robasart is listed as a member of the Arnoring clan (one of the five original clans of the Colymar), and the later Karandoli King Ortossi is a quite close relative (decended from a first cousin). To me it seems that the Arnoring chieftain's family did not destroy the Karandoli clan when it was under pressure from the Varmandi and the Telmori (both of whom are mentioned to have caused the destruction of the Karandoli, as is Robasart), but instead took over the chieftainship over this clan, or re-founded it. This explains how the eleventh king of the Colymar can claim to be of the Karandoli, but has the same blood-line as has the Arnoring king Robasart Broyansson.

The final destruction of the Karandoli clan is blamed on Jenstali magic. Argrath tells details of this: Venharl Intagarnsson (later the 12th King of the Colymar) went on a hunt with Ortossi, last Karandoli King of the Colymar, and lures him to follow the blue wolf, a beast which had haunted his dreams before and which Venharl had summoned from "the Other Side" on the side of a fairy-mound.

Argrath tells how the Karandoli clanspeople slowly disappear, and apparently join their king on the Other Side. When the Jenstali clan claims all kind of rights from the Karandoli, they follow the children of the king to the other side, and disappear without a trace. All they leave behind are the stone foundations of their homes in the Brambleberry Hills.

Argrath also gives a possible date and cause for the Jenstali extermination, Dangmar Longsword, his great-grandfather, and great-grandson of King Ortossi.

The bloodline of Maniski Firebreath can be continued backwards to the early days of settlement in Dragon Pass, as Anamorl, great-great grandfather of Maniski, fought alongside Colymar the founder (presumably around 1320, when or after the original Colymar village had been burnt down by the First Wave immigrants from Heortland).

The other mystery about the Karandoli (and their opponents, the Jenstali clan) is their origin. The Karandoli are said to originate from the Syphon region in Heortland, and they move into the Brambleberry Hills (between the Quivin Peaks and Larnste's Table, now again Malani territory) after the Malani had moved on. The Jenstali appear in the Thunder Hills (southeast of Apple Lane) without mention of their origin.

The Karandoli appear in Colymar lands after the First Wave. Their role in the tribe is a bit unclear, since the Hiordings are mentioned as the first clan adopted into the tribe. (This happened after the founding of the Anmagarn, or Black Spear clan.) They bargained to live in Colymar territory, and were accepted as settlers, though not explicitely in the tribe (?). However, already the king after the one who had allowed the Hiordings into the tribe is said to have been a Karandoli. Apparently the Karandoli were accepted very soon after the Hiordings, and before the Runegate tribe (aka Hyaloring Triaty), who were accepted by the Karandoli King of the Colymar Venharl. (Unless the Karandoli adoption was omitted by the author of the History section of the Colymar Book since their clan was presumed extinct.)

The Jenstali origin is even more guesswork: By 1465, the Jenstali had become an accepted clan of the Colymar, in that they provided the tenth King of the Colymar. We know that they are the Red Fox clan, and that they provided two kings of the Colymar, from the same bloodline. They could be the product of the splitting of an established Colymar clan, since their lands lay quite central in Colymar lands.
