Wow! Alex does twice what no one else has done once.:-)

Roman Army at the end of the Republic

The size of the Roman Army in 44 BC after Caesar's defeat of Pompey was probably 37 legions (~150,000 [1]). At Actium in 31 BC Octavian had 24 legions and Antony 19 (with another 4 on ships) for a total of roughly 190,000 at that battle alone. There were certainly at least a few other legions holding down the borders while this was going on. Unfortunately I don't have good sources handy for army sizes under the Imperium, but the Republic is closer to the Lunar Empire in population.

[1] The size of a legion nowhere reliably attested. A 'full' legion was probably 5000-6000, though legions were rarely at full strength. 4000 is a reasonable average size.
