>> A few thoughts on healing spells and how they "really" work: I was trying to
figure out what they look and feel like to cast and to receive, and ended up having to go back to first principles. <<

I look on the effects of healing in glorantha being similar to that in the real world. Except in glorantha there is this nice spirit spell HEALing magic, which accelerates healing at an incredible pace. This allows for the warriors to get scars in battle which they can then show and brag about to their buddies/grandchildren etc.

A slight adjustment to your theory will also allow your warriors to have scars too! The healing had not been done quick enough, meaning the aura had already become 'scarrred'.

IMO, Healing Divine Magic is special and is able - to the spells limit - through the divine knowledge of your deity how a 'person' is to be healed.

<< Heal Body ...restores the whole body to the same state as the aura, instantly... Heal Wound is definitely at a deeper level. >>

Heal Wound is a less powerful spell than heal body. While it may cure the damage to a non functioning arm, it will not restore the use to a non functional arm nor cause regrowth of a severed limb. A Heal Body should allow reattachment of a severed limb provided that it was reattached within a very specific time period after severing.

>> what do I mean by "aura", "soul" etc. anyway? My vague feeling is that
aura is to soul as magic points are to POW, and neither are the same as the thing called "spirit" that survives after death, but I could do with some help here. <<

In Glorantha I would equate the soul + power to equal spirit. And left the aura as being the spiritual representation of the physical body, which is left behind when the spirit departs.

For information on shamanistic practices may I suggest the FAQ at <http://www.webcom.com/gspirit/Shaman/shamanov.html>. While rather light on references to healing it does refer to a sufficient number of reference works.
