Most encounters with Vadeli are with Browns.

They are sorcery users, like most Westerners. I think they believe in the Creator, but believe that he has abandoned his creation. They certainly don't believe he makes moral judgements of their conduct (as modern Malkioni appear to believe).

Vadeli use sorcery appropriate to their caste, but they interpret this differently to the the Brithini. They take 'appropriate to your caste' to mean 'to do with the things that your caste does'. So all magic to with battle and killing is available to Reds, all manner of magic that is useful to their professions to Browns, and all sorts of twisted mental magics to the blues. A Brown shipwright, for example, would be an expert with Form/Set and Animate Wood. A Brown steersman able to call up appropriate winds and currents, probably including elementals. Of course, they also use all this magic in the most cunning ways they can find.

Note that most Browns are not merchants by trade - the Brown Vadeli run their own ships. Its just that the sly merchants are the Vadeli most often met. I imagine most other Brown Vadeli are uncommunicative and sullen towards outsiders though, only making weird jokes in their strange language that the other Browns laugh at. The sailors on the Black Ships from the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath are a good place to start - like them, the Brown Vadeli should be mysterious and unpleasant, but far more horrible once you find out what really goes on.
