One thought is that the hollows produce music when darksensed, another path might be false colour infrared imaging style pictures - not actually sensing heat, but getting an artificial color pattern from the sculpture that roughly conforms to the shape of the objects in or on it.
On the third tentacle, there may be objects which do not show up on darksense or show poorly. Imbedding these in a scupture would produce areas of 'darkness' - an absence of a ping back.
