Re. Wargame Lunes...
How about painting/flocking a portion of the base dark colours or black/dark grey to show that it is in shadow. Put a couple of figures in their death-throws on the base within the shadowed area. Either paint them with just a black wash or paint them and then put a wash over them. Where a limb extends outside of the shadowed area leave it painted normally...
I think that is pretty much what a gloranthan would see...
