It depends on the myth involved. Some, like the LBQ, are known far and wide. Others, like the Terminus Quest, are told, but most other cults don't bother to pay attention, as they don't concern them. Others, like the Black Fang quest on the Web (name escapes me, alas) are kept very secret. The real trick is to know the details, like the names of the Air elementals used by Harmast (presumably), in the "Strange Fragment" from KoS, to drive off the Sea elementals rather than being forced to submit to the Baths of Nelat, which had killed everyone save Orlanth, himself, who tried it.

Compare it to our knowledge of Indian mythology. Many of us probably know enough to describe the major gods as well as a child in Bombay, but few have bothered to read, let alone memorize, the Vedas and Sutras like a proper Brahmin (which would be at least the level of familiarity needed to reliably Heroquest in it).

No, the Lesser Darkness came immediately (or al least quickly). The Greater Darkness had to wait until Rashoran was sacrificed by the Unholy Trio.
