        IMO it could be that metals are considered more "runic" (whatever that means in a particular campaign) OR that metals, since they can be used to make utensils etc. are not considered "unyielding" enough for that purpose. Diamonds (and other gems) could be considered part-crystals and therefore in the "territory" of magicians.

        Just came to my mind...
