<< He then wonders about Newtling ancestor worship. If Newtlings dump their en  mass eggs then individual Newtlings wouldn't know (or care) who their  parents are. Maybe the ideas of Ancestry and Geneology are alien to them!  Could the Great Newt be like a spirit cult but only be contactable by  Newtlings? Anyone got any thoughts or ideas?

You could argue (and to prove it I'm going to) that a parent that lays thousands of eggs, blesses you above thousands of others by helping you survive (possibly by not eating you) and is extremely powerful and knowledgeable about the world, even beyond the world and onto Dry Land, is more worthy of worship than a human parent who, although older and more experienced is fairly similar to it's offspring. Worship of ancestors could be a kind of propiatory thing; sacrifice to mother or else she eats you! This view/outlook gives a Newtling culture that lives in fear; terrified by it's parents who seem totally uncaring and awesomely powerful.
