Example of plan where "donation" is actually "investment":

The US Chess Federation at one time offered lifetime membership, including a lifetime subscription to Chess Life magazine (worth $17/year), for $100 (break even in 6 years; last time I checked you could still get it for $600, but that was a long time ago). Hmmmm, fixed donation, variable return, scheduled publications provide "value"...sounds familiar.
