As opposed to the great majority of people in the RW, past and present, who while pretending to believe in the afterlife or reincarnation promised by Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, etc. don't really do so? Knowing there's an afterlife doesn't seem to alleviate people's fear of death, which is a basic human trait, IMO.
