Moonboats

In a message dated 9/29/99 10:13:43PM, you write: << As they ride on moonbeams, inside the glowline where the moon is always  full and strong, they are reliable and very fast.

Outside, they are subject to the vagaries of the waxing and waning moon.  As their motive power depends on strength of the moon, as it fades they  slow down markedly and become more difficult to control. >>

The image this brings to mind is a Moonboat captain desperately trying to fly his boat fast enough to keep up with the changing phases of the moon. Flying around one seventh of an arc per day, and eventually flying off as centrifugal forces overcome the moonbeam. Not that this is necessarily what actually happens, I just thought it was amusing. The same criteria could apply to the bat; if it is close enough to the moon and keeps up it's Dragon Pass speed of then it can always stay ahead of the 'Dark Side' bit as long as it stays close enough to the moon (I reckon about 11 hexes) and avoid Hunger.
