i thought the word was originaly not 'housecarl' but huscarl, derived from the words 'horse' and 'carl'. - a warrior, possibly just a fyrdman, wealthy enough to ride a horse on his way to war, or to act as light cavalry.

housecarl could be something different, like Nick suggests

weaponthane always sounded to me like the clan/tribal champion
