Don't pummel me for a source, but I thought that Volsaxi clans and tribes _were_ much larger than Sartarite ones? Or were the appearences of such rationalised as being some sort of tribal confederation/sub-tribes typa thing?

Interesting thought. That they survived (in some form or another at least) inside larger tribes may be some sort of stream of consciousness support for this. Certainly triaties seem a very different model of social organisation than 'larger' tribes, which don't in general seem to affect any remotely analogous customs of formlalised intermarriage (or come to that, by implication, have clans which are as strictly exogamous?).

Cheers,
Alex.
