The campaign need not be that short. The rituals require that large numbers of red-shirts be sacrificed, not all red-shirts. Death is only mandatory for a red-clothed crew member

a) who went to the academy with the captain
b) who's parent is a close friend or went to the academy with the captain
c) who is a current or former lover of the captain.
