I really don't know what the author intends (and I've only read this one story), but I agree that the character *must* be more than he appears. Personally, I think he has at least one "Dark Secret". The teeth are a dead givaway, if you ask me! If broos in Dorastor can worship a being they call Humakt, then surely an Ogre...
