I agree with RIck on mosy of his points and commend his description of HW however I have a different opinion on the above statement. One of the features of a RPG is that it needs to be able to simulate imaginary situations, so if we had game stats* for My Dad and game stats for Your Dad then, in theory we could use them to simulate a blow by blow battle beteen the two of them, however unlikely that may seem. This, to some extent, is part of the purpose of a rules structure to games. Who would win the Hulk or Spiderman, Napoleon or Wellington, The Greeks or Persians, Harrek or Onslaught, Crimson Bat or Cwim. This is a small but important part of RPGs and wargames. IMO.
*defining and agreeing game stats being the problem in most cases (especially My Dad)
