The tradition of front-line officers actually reaches even past the Napoleonic era. The American Civil war saw most of the officer staffs of both sides take the field during combat. Even the "little Napoleon" (McClellan), who distinguished himself specifically and especially by his unwillingness to fight, took the field on a few occasions.
