This sounds to me very much like re-inventing the Polaris wheel. I've always pictured the 'typical' YT as the H. Jones style of colonel, (regimental commander in LE terms), which is about as high as you can rise and still reasonably be primarily a warrior, rather than a strategist. File-leader would be more likely more of a specialist hoplite (or whatever) ritual post, rather than YT, I agree, but more senior sub-commanders commanders (of 'centuries' or 'maniples', to use terms which may well make Martin yelp, or the very approximate equivalents) very well could be.
