A quick note from work.
As someone who has crossed swords with Gian (on a heart-felt though tangential topic), and further explored said topic with him by e-mail (to what I hope was mutual further understanding and cordial respect), I also ask that he reconsider his second sign off.
There are general rules of netiquette that I hope apply to the Digest, and if they are unwritten, then I see no problem in writing them up if necessary. My personal suggestions:
IMNSHO, the Digest should be neither a university seminar room nor a boxing ring. It's a pub, and our understanding and tolerance should reflect this. Our conversations are usually of the type we'd have sharing an ale or a glass of vino. People shout, people say things you disagree with, people sometimes take liberties with quotes and strict facts, the background noise can be very loud, and sometimes things get a little heated, but all in all its an amiable and enjoyable atmosphere. We come here for friendship and for entertainment as well as to share our common passion. Sometimes folk say things that, in the spirit of friendship, everyone else round the table will pointedly forget by morning. And yes, occasionally there will be a bar room brawl.
Is Gian given to excess zeal and tendency to flame? Well, in my own opinion yes. And flame wars on multiple fronts do take their toll. (This is not personal: Do I have my own intolerances and idiosyncrasies? 'Blood Oath Narelle!'[) Has Gian adjusted his style after learning from initial encounters. Yes. Have difficulties in language and communication style and differences in temperament contributed to this? Most certainly. Has he done anything that most long-time Digesters haven't said or done in the past? No, not that I can see. Does he have something substantial to contribute? Yes, most certainly!
SO STICK AROUND AND CONTRIBUTE GIAN! I'll get back to sex, infanticide and the dark side of the Orlanthi on the weekend.
Cheers
John
