I don't know about native american tribes, but this is something that AFAIK most cultures of peasants know. In the place from where my mother cames everybody knows that there are certain plants and erbs with abortive effects.

The place from where my mother comes (a plain called Alentejo, in south Portugal) is the driest part of the country. A good part of the traditional diet of the local populations was based on savage erbs.
Like that place, the Praxian plains are not without plants, they just sem so to people coming from other, more luxurious places. The plains have a lot of erbs and small plants, perfectly adapted to its climate. The local oasis people must know how to use these to their advantage.
Here goes a little dish that's part of the Praxians diet:
Boil some wather. Boil an egg in it (or a small cheese; or a piece of dried
fish or meat).
In a bowl, put some bread. Above the bread, put some fresh herbs, mached
with garlic and salt. Add oil. Now, put the egg (or cheese, or etc.) above
this put the boiling wather. Here you have a delicious oasis people soup.
(Based on a traditional Alentejo soup.)

I doubt that the nomads drink or use more water then the oasis people. They
are dependent in the same environment to survive. (In fact, the nomads must
be used to need even less water, since they have to cross the driest parts
of the Wastes and Prax, places where the oasis people don't dare too go.)
Of course, the nomads need water to their animals, but these are also
adapted to harsh conditions.
The nomads want to preserve the oasis, not to destroy them.

Most probably, the oasis people either change (to become a part of the invading culture), or die. Foreigners (meaning, people coming from out of Prax) carry new diseases, and expend require much more water. This, of course, if the nomands don't have magical resources of their own to deal with strangers. (But you already know what I think about the oasis people.)
