Up till Ignifer, there really wasn't that much _widespread_ knowledge, but bear in mind that the Empire has been using the concept long before the Red Emperor. He simply has more proxy power than any Emperor before him. So the nobility certainly know of it, as do their Buseri, the IO sages and a whole wad of other people. Many rural folk will not of course.
>Surely the average Lunar citizen only understands that there is a single
Moonson >who being divine can appear in more than one place at once.
Hmm a Lunar citizen would actually know enough about Sedenya and the Emperor to at least have a vague understanding that the Emperor has multiple souls. Non-citizen DHs know this but are unaware fo the other apsects of the Emperor.
>Any apparent conflicts between multiple emperors are a lack of understanding
of >that divine being.
Some people see it like that, certainly, but those in power don't.
>Of the rest only a minority would understand the full magical
>significance of the proxy, the rest can merely be told that the
>emperor reabsorbed his proxy without going into the detail of which
>was the emperor and which the proxy.
Yes, I would agree with this. This can happen, but the core of the powers that be know the truth of proxy status.
>Of course witnesses and those
>who really know what was going on are likely to have good reason to
>be somewhere else very quickly.
You bet! Or at least as fervent in their support for the true Emperor as they were for the revealed false proxy.
