Hi All,
Christoph:
>Good for you (?). My favorite socialist thinkers are, for obvious reasons,
>Pierre-Joseph Proudhon & Benjamin Tucker. I hope that's the kind of
>socialism you like also...

I've always been partial to Georgi Dimitrov "the Peoples' Front Against Fascism and War"
and James Connolly " the man who traces his ancestry to the defenders Derry's Walls is as dear to me as he who traces his anscetry to the followers of Partick Sarfield. Neither fought for ireland, but for which foreign king they wanted to rule Ireland".

well ok thats 2 realllllly bad paraphrases :-)

>(Robert "the *first* socialist" Owen &
>"Harmony" is an example)

Based on his earlier "New Lanark" model in central Scotland. - now a tourist attraction at the "Falls of the Clyde" I hasten to add:-)

>He, he, he !!! <ferocious american patriotic grin>

Interstingly (no, make that shamefully) the Scottish community living in America at that time sided almost unanimously with the Brit forces. This is intersting as they were largely former Jacobite rebels and included Flora Mac Donald (who famously helped "Bonnie Prince Charlie" to safety as in the "Skye Boat Song") and her entire male family who became volunteer red coats. Flora was captured and imprisoned by the Americans under suspicion of treason, just like in Britian 30 years or so ago. She was released and returned to die on Skye. Main point for me is the complete worthlessness of the Jackobite cause despite the bravery and desperation of much of their followers. - Like JC said "neither fought for <scotland> but for which foreign king....". Sad eh ? Not as sad as the tartan coloured glasses most Scots wear when they look at their past.

>The following "liberal" Democrat presidents F.D. Roosevelt, JFK, LBJ & Clinton
>are fine socialists and/or social democrats in any one's book, aren't they ?

Well, lets just say much finer than our own "sainted" Tony Blair.

>Thank you again Nick & Chris for this nice post, I'm looking forward to
>seeing the reactions I'll get !?!

reacting on invite for once. - Chris.
