Why does this 'appear' to be so? (BTW, I gather that the well-dressed linguist these days prefers 'logographic', the idea of a symbol representing an _idea_ (as it were) being liable to get them up a cognitive blind alley...)

I can't recall the correct posh latin for an appeal to authority, but Greg will be at another Con in a fortnight...
