Me:

David:
>Jhoraz Khyree was almost certainly no such thing -- he was a Pure
>Horse chieftain. Since the Pure Horse had been allied with the
>Jrusteli approximately 30 years earlier, my guess is that he is (like
>most chieftains) a politician, who figured his chances were much
>better with the EWF (which was after all a lot closer to Prax than
>the Jrusteli).

Me again:
No problem with the general perception of JK, he definitely was a Pure Horse Chieftain first and foremost. However: "Joraz was a man of the sun, as were all the Pure Horse people in those days. Yet he was different too: changed by a mixture of magics offered by the EWF *where he and Pavis had studied and become friends* " (P&BRp61)

My original statement lacked clarity. I meant that Pavis and JK studied unusual philosophies and magical techniques that were available within the draconically inspired EWF. These might not be directly draconic (Greg is currently undecided about Pavis having included draconic thought amongst his studies or not), but were available due to the predominance of draconic thought having created unusual opportunities for study, experimentation and philosophy.

Main points being that JK was not 'just' a war leader but also a progressive thinker, and a heroic quester. It was he after all who produced riding zebras from horse and native zebra, and I imagine that this involved a fairly intense 'trip to the other side'. I think this action, as well as the strong association of his people with the city, proves that he was a progressive member of his people (who do indeed otherwise seem to be strong traditionalists).
