While I appreciate it's not relevant to the shortsword-wielding Steelswords (FWIW, Simon M, my vision of them is quite Roman, too), can I just note that I would say that the Lunar 'scimitar' is more like a sabre than the classic Arab 'harem guard's scimitar.' In other words, a narrower, generally slightly longer blade, half straight, then gently curved. See, for example, ILH p17. A medium sabre weighs about 38 oz, or just over a kilo.
BTW, the classic DH sword is a khopis/kopis, the Greek-style blade (there's
a nice picture near the bottom of
