A bow string breaking is a nuisance but a BOW braking can be a definite hazard to your health.
Not to mention the possibility of over drawing bow so that the arrow point gets stuck behind the bow and when shot the arrow ends up going backwards ! [Nasty I have seen it done]  

That's why we always give novices to archery arrows that are at least 3" to long for them.  

These though are just examples I know from real life but its up to you at the end of the day to decide what the long term consequences to him are. And there is no reason why the consequences have to be physical damage in this case.
