Do battlefield tactics really have very much to do with how small groups of individuals fight?

The dynamics of the archer/infantry confrontation will be significantly different for a couple of archers vs a couple of melee specialists and for 100's vs 100's. For example the archers can stop aiming at individual targets and start firing massed volleys at a general area like C13th Egyptian Mamlukes.
