Or... perhaps a (theistic) craftsman could "awaken" the objects used as wards, using his cult secret? Once they'd been awakened, you could use them over and over. Presumably the more powerful the craftsman is, the more useful the wards are (e.g. ranging from "give the owner an uneasy feeling if they're crossed" to "wake up everyone inside if they're crossed" to "make a spirit/magical attack on anyone who crosses the wards"...?

Just a thought...
