True - but I sensed that you didn't want to hear "just turn it into a bonus." That's very yawn inducing. I'd just have the "gift pool" refresh each night or whenever I hand out HP.

That would work too. And that has the extra virtue of not adding a new mechanic - something I'm loath to do.
