You guys are misremembering the scene. The Emperor is taunting Luke and using Vader to threaten him in order to provoke hatred, fear and all that Dark Side mojo within Luke so he'll turn. The lighsabre fight is the principal lever the Emperor is using upon Luke, with subsidiary levers being the rebel fleet getting trashed by the Death Star and the betrayal of Han et al down on the Forest Moon.

None of this is really working however, Luke fights defensively and although pressed hard is managing to hold things together. Its only when Vader stumbles upon the secret of Leia ("Sister. Well if you won't turn then perhaps she will...") that Luke loses it and his Relationship:Family flips from being an augment to his Jedi virtues to being a potentially fatal weakness.

Empowered by the Dark Side Luke drives Vader back and defeats him, taking Vader's hand off in the process. On the verge of killing his father and falling to the Dark Side its *Vader's* missing hand that pulls him back from the brink (a crit/fumble roll-off if ever there was one) tipping the Emperor into negative APs and winning the contest for Luke ("I will NEVER turn to the Dark Side").

The whole thing with Vader coming back into the fight and throwing the Emperor down the ventilation shaft is some kind of desperation stake AP transfer from Luke to Vader I reckon, but the main battle is won when Luke looks down at Vader's smoking wrist and talks the GM into letting him use his Cybernetic Hand ability as an additional augment on his defence against the Emperor's final monster AP bid ("Kill your father and assume your rightful position at my side!").

Regards
Luke (not *that* one tho')
