Maybe this is obvious, but it's probably worth saying once: Since most narrators let players pick many of their own keywords and give them a chunk of character creation points, the fact that keyword abilities start higher than narrative ones just doesn't seem like that big a deal. And of course, you can add "color" to the character in the backstory, not just by abilities.
So if you want a character with unusual abilities, shop around for weird keywords, dump a ton of character creation points on narrative abilities instead of keyword abilities, and add odd backstory where the narrator allows.
That's how I ended up playing a night hunter fanatically devoted to the canoe god who hails from the River Cow clan, which has the finest manatee ponds in Umathela.
