Err, best I can guess is that you need to work on your descriptions, not abilities per se. I mean, you can take the most mundane ability (say, Sword & Shield) and describe it like a D&D adventure - "I hit him woith my sword...success." or decribe it like any of the Achilles fights from Troy. It's all in the presentation - the best abilities in the world don't mean spit if they are simply described as "I hit him".
