I think you could use the basic mechanics in a gamist way, but perhaps use a few additional tweaks, for examples - different flavours of Heropoints, some only used for magic, some for passions, others for wealth etc. I'm basically saying, increase the number of resources to be managed, and make the tactical decisions more complex.

For extended contests, have some mechanics to limit the choice of AP bid somehow, and use edges.

Do augments AFTER you roll the dice to speed things up.
