John , I am squarely in your camp here, especially when first running a game. I am trying to get a handle on how the game is supposed to run, not how I might want or prefer it to do so.

I suspect that by changing the resistance part way through I was breaking from the games intentions. Regardless of the time frame of a conflict if we choose to run it as a single extended contest we are defining it as a single scene even if as it was in my case, a scene that represented a number of hours and many shifts of skill. It would be akin to a montage in a film, the protagonists are doing many things and striving for a goal, but it's nature should not shift radically and it remains a single point on a pass/fail graph.
