In my currently active games they're just broad abilities.
I have some things cooking where I'm planning on using a few as packages, because I want to write them up beforehand as a tool to communicate things about the setting to the players.
Umbrella method I haven't used in actual play yet, but I think it's a good tool for some magic stuff (though the cost balance of 2 vs. 1 points makes me wonder.)
