Others have already supplied great answers. But consider this:

        Does the trait/ability *define* the character in any way?

Would the character be a different person if they did not have that experience or relation? If yes, it is a valid character trait.

        "My name is Inigo Montoya..." etc.

Don't get too hung up on the word 'ability' - anything that can be used to distinguish a character is valid.
