gaining AP

One of my characters was once defending a ship against pirates. He felled his first two opponents quickly, and fighters on both sides started to notice what was going on. Progressively stronger opponents came on, and he served each the same way, took their heads, and shouted 'Next!.

I think he'd have been fully entitled to any AP gains from each contest from sheer intimidation value.

When telling the story, he likes to ask the listeners which was the bravest of his opponents. His answer: 'the seventh, for he had seen how I served the other six'.

He's now busy learning the word 'next' in the languages of each of his enemies.

A simpler justification for a player ending up with more APs than he started with is that he's gained a positional advantage such as breaking through the enemy line.
