Don't worry, you are not the only one with problems ;) <snip>

there's more scope than that for affinities. Can the (and I'm
stretching and guessing because I don't have my rules at work) Mahome
worshipper say "I'm using my fire affinity to light the camp fire"
<zot> "Campfire's burning, campfire's burning..."
Basically, i would allow player to do something like this with the usual improvisational modifier. Simple contest, or, for the campfire, even a skill check. If he wanted to attack someone with fire, he would use his skill in fire affinity instead of CC / RC skill, with modifiers. In important situation, use extended contest, otherwise use simple contest. Opponent resist with approriate ability, or with basic magic resistance (14 if i remember correctly)

Feat ?
I let my player attack zombie (in extended contest) with his Truesword Stroke- feat. Critical vs. failure, zombie used basic magical resistance roll (14). I judged that TS- feat ignored the zombies ability to fight below 0 AP:s (narrator's book). Byebye mister zombie.
> Is it honestly just a case of looking at the feat / affinity,
thinking of a plausible use for it and going for it ?
That's how i do it in my games.

Maybe we could start collecting game examples in the Files- section. Not just the feats/affinities, also basic game examples. This would help us newbies a lot, allowing us to use whatever examples feel right to our games. Opinions, anyone?
