    I don't have the books with me but if IIRC a spirit either gives you its ability (if you don't have it) or augments your ability and act as a follower. So if you use the spirit's Strong, you begin the contest with an ability of 17 and 17 AP, otherwise with your ability (possibly augmented by the spirit's) and with ability + 17 (spirit's) AP.
